On March 19, 2013, in Springville, New York, 16-year-old Dylan Schumaker found himself babysitting his girlfriend Ashlee Smith’s two young sons while she worked her shift at a restaurant. Tragically, by the end of the night, one of the sons had lost his life, leading to Schumaker’s arrest on charges of murder. It was revealed that he had fatally beaten Austin, the older son who was just shy of turning two years old.
During the trial, Schumaker, convicted of second-degree murder, wept as he insisted that he never intended to cause Austin’s death and professed his love for the child. Despite his emotional plea, State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller denounced Schumaker as a ‘manipulator and deceiver,’ accusing him of attempting to influence the jury through tears. In response, the justice sentenced Schumaker to 25 years to life in prison for the tragic death of the toddler.
Dylan Schumaker is presently incarcerated at the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York. He becomes eligible for parole in the year 2031.
In February 2016, the Court of Appeals revised Dylan Schumaker’s prison term to 18 years to life, allowing him the possibility of parole in 2031 upon completing the designated 18-year period behind bars. Even upon release, he will continue to be under the state’s supervision.
At 26 years old, Schumaker has already spent 9 years of his indeterminate sentence, starting from his imprisonment in 2014. His current place of incarceration is the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York, where he is serving out the remainder of his sentence.
