If you plan on opening a veterinary clinic, it’s safe to say that you’re the type who keeps the welfare of pets (and their humans) in high regard. You can start by setting up a well-equipped clinic with a welcoming environment. Here, we compiled some things you will need for your veterinary practice.

Exam Room Equipment

As a vet practice, you want to be able to perform various treatments and procedures. To cover for those, it’s important that you have the necessary equipment, which include:

  • Vet stethoscope
  • Vet pumps or IV pumps
  • Vet ultrasound
  • Anaesthesia machine
  • Vet telemetry system
  • Monitoring equipment
  • Respiratory ventilators
  • Digital X-ray machine
  • CT scanner
  • MRI equipment
  • Defibrillators
  • Incubators
  • Endoscope
  • Microscope
  • Dental unit
  • Weighing scale
  • Autoclaves and sterilisers
  • Wound care products

Treatment Tables

Each room should have examination and surgery tables where you’ll lay the pet so they can get proper treatment. Depending on your needs, you can choose from a variety of tables, including v-top, lift, or electric and hydraulic tables. Some of the features you should look for include:

  • Sturdy – It’s common for pets to feel uncomfortable and sometimes a little out of control when they’re brought in for treatment. Look for tables that are sturdy enough to handle that.
  • Adjustable – Most tables are made to accommodate different sizes of pets and can be positioned in a way that makes it easier to access specific areas that are under examination.
  • Easy to clean – Your staff shouldn’t have a hard time cleaning and disinfecting them.

Adequate Lighting

When performing surgery and other medical procedures, the importance of adequate lighting cannot be overstated. It’s a good thing there are many types of lighting designed particularly for vet practice and even for very specific needs like surgery, general exams and diagnosis.

Cages for Patients

On some occasions, patients may need to stay longer under your care. It’s best to equip your clinic with cages where pets can stay while they’re being observed or during their recovery period.

Seating for Patients and Their Humans

Make sure there’s an area where your clients can sit comfortably while waiting for their beloved pets to get treated. Medical procedures can be stressful enough for both pets and their humans, so you want to ensure you have a nice, clean waiting area.

Product Display

Most veterinary clinics also carry products like medicines, vitamins, treats, dental care items and even toys and grooming supplies. This way, clients won’t have to go elsewhere if they need to purchase anything as prescribed by the vet. To cover their needs, make sure you have a well-stocked and visible product display

Sanitation Area

Whether or not there’s a pandemic, having a sanitation area is vital in a vet practice. Patients (and people) will be coming in and moving out the entire day, so you want to maintain proper sanitation for everyone’s health. Must-haves include hand sanitizers, disinfectant sprays and tissue papers. In addition, you want to make sure there are trash cans everywhere.

The list above is by no means exhaustive, but hopefully, we’ve been able to cover some basics. You probably don’t need everything at once especially if you’re just starting out. With the essentials mentioned above, you’ll be able to provide the first-rate care pets and humans deserve.
