Dr. Zafar Mirza, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Health, has said that the decision to lockdown immediately after Eid will have to be reconsidered.

Talking to media in Islamabad, he said that people had a misconception that it was a disease till Eid and after that it would be eradicated. However, I would like to warn Pakistanis not to take precautionary measures and not maintain it can turn the situation into a big tragedy.

Referring to the global situation, he said that at present 5.5 million cases have been confirmed in the world while about 3.5 million deaths have been reported but most of the people i.e. 42% have recovered from it.

Referring to the situation in Pakistan, he said that we are gradually increasing testing in the country but still we have not been able to increase testing as much as we wanted but it will increase in the coming days.

“Immediately after Eid, the government will review the situation and if it is deemed necessary and SOPs are not implemented, we will definitely have to reconsider the lockdown decision,” he said.

The Special Assistant said that it is in our hands that if we fulfill our responsibility, life and employment can continue and the spread of the disease can be stopped, but if we act irresponsibly, the disease will also spread. We will also have to lock down, which will make our lives difficult and hurt the country’s economy.

He appealed to the people to stop the disease instead of spreading it, wear masks, follow SOPs and take social distance.
