Despite the headlines, there has been a growing swell of compassion as people are turning to help neighbors and those around them during the pandemic. If you want to help, but you don’t know where to start, these four tips will set you on a path to make a real difference in your community.

1. Support Local Nonprofits

Nonprofit organizations that generally rely on revenue from visitors or large fundraising events are hurting right now. Museums have been hit particularly hard. If you are able, donate to holocaust museum or another worthy cause close to your heart to help them weather the current shutdowns.

2. Preserve Educational Institutions

No matter what level of education you consider, the pandemic has had a lasting impact. Preschools are limiting class sizes, elementary schools are adopting alternate-day schedules and many high schools and universities are switching to remote offerings. Reach out to your local schools and find out how you can best support them. From arranging virtual field trips to helping tutor struggling students, many of them will welcome the help.

3. Help Out Your Neighbors

Instead of looking at the overwhelmingly large picture, take a look around your own community. See what needs to be done and step up to the plate. This may be helping an elderly neighbor with running errands, offering to drive someone to an appointment or even just calling a shut-in to see how they are doing.

4. Organize Supply Drives

Sadly, many organizations are struggling to meet the sudden increase in demand. Find out what medical centers, libraries, and food pantries need and host a supply drive. By harnessing the power of your friends and family, you’ll make a difference in the lives of others who are struggling to get by.

Kindness and compassion are sorely needed right now. Whether you choose to donate to a worthy cause or volunteer your time and efforts, there are plenty of ways you can make a difference in your community.
