1. Look for Discounts and Assistance Programs
Many programs and organizations provide discounts and payment assistance for military Veterans’ travel expenses. For example, you may receive military Veteran flight travel discounts for personal travel. Some Veterans may also need monetary assistance for travel related to medical or psychological treatment or to provide their family members and dependents with tickets or travel documents.
2. Be Vigilant About Military Travel Options and Schedules
Depending on your reasons for traveling, you may be doing so at times when many other current or former members of the military are traveling. It’s a good idea to be aware of the travel options available to you and when those options are more likely to be crowded. If possible, you can then schedule your travel plans for less busy times or dates.
3. Try To Be Flexible
Above all, it’s important to remember to be flexible. All types of travel can come with delays and detours. Certain military and Veteran travel programs, such as Space-A, may be quite different from civilian flight options. If you do fly commercial as a Veteran, you will likely be eligible for TSA PreCheck, but not every airport offers it, so you need to be aware of when you can’t use it and plan your airport arrival accordingly.
Remember to review the travel-related benefits you’re eligible for as a Veteran. They may differ from those available to you as an active-duty service member. The benefits available to your family members and dependents may also change.
