Are you ready to start straightening your teeth? Whether you’ve spent years neglecting your retainer or this is your first attempt at getting a straighter smile, this is an exciting time!

But how are you going to prepare? Did you know that there are a few things to do before you get braces?  We’re here to talk all about the right steps to take from finding an orthodontist to your first consultation. Keep reading to learn more.

1. Do Your Research

Any time you’re going to do something regarding your health, it’s crucial that you do the right research ahead of time. Even correcting teeth is a serious procedure!

Your research is going to have several components.

First, check out different types of orthodontic options and narrow them down to the ones that you’re interested in.

Most people either get metal braces, ceramic braces, or Invisalign treatment. Not everyone is a good candidate for every option, but it’s helpful to at least have your favorite one in mind when you visit your orthodontist.

Then, work on finding an orthodontist. Use Google to find local orthodontists near you that offer the service that you’re looking for. Be sure to read reviews and look at before-and-after photos.

2. Visit Your Dentist

Before you step foot in the orthodontist’s office, make sure that you have a routine dental visit first. If you’re between visits, it’s still helpful to make an appointment before your next scheduled one.

You want your teeth and gums to be healthy before you seek out orthodontic treatment. Braces and aligners are safe if your teeth are in good condition, but they may lead to oral hygiene and health problems if you don’t start with healthy teeth.

Make sure that you get a professional dental cleaning while you’re there! Ask for advice about how to keep teeth clean during your treatment time and set up another appointment so they can keep an eye on your progress.

Talk to your dentist about local orthodontists to see if they have any recommendations. Many of them will refer you to their preferred orthodontist!

3. Consult With an Orthodontist

When you’re finally ready to start straightening your smile, take your list of preferred orthodontists and start contacting them. Most orthodontists will allow you to schedule a free consult to see if you’re a good match.

Keep in mind that not all orthodontists offer the same services. Some may not feel as though they can treat your specific problem with your desired orthodontic apparatus as well.

It’s fine to have several consultations, but don’t just look around until someone gives you the answer that you want.

Try These Things to Do Before You Get Braces

Make sure you complete all of these things to do before you get braces if you want safe and healthy orthodontic treatment! Do your research, visit your normal dentist, and schedule a few consultations with local orthodontists.
